Alex Roslin, 2020 Magazine Award Co-Winner
Alex Roslin is a journalist based in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. He has focused on social justice and investigative reporting for nearly 30 years.
Alex helped found and also co-edited, The Nation, a twice-monthly news and cultural magazine serving the Cree First Nations of northern Quebec and Ontario. Alex has worked as an associate producer for the CBC-TV investigative programs The Fifth Estate and Disclosure, and has written in-depth features for The Montreal Gazette, the Financial Post, the Globe and Mail, Zoomer, Canadian Geographic, Canadian Wildlife, the Toronto Star, Maclean’s and has been a juror for several national and Quebec writing and book awards.
Recognition of Alex's work includes three Canadian Association of Journalists prizes as well as twelve nominations for CAJ awards and National Magazine Awards. He also won the President's Award of the Professional Writers Association of Canada for spearheading the creation of the organization’s writing awards and served as the co-chair of the nominations and awards committee. He helped found the Canadian Centre for Investigative Reporting and was president of its board of directors.
Alex's winning submission is entitled Canada’s Hidden Shame: How COVID-19 Exposed Years of Systemic Neglect in Long-Term Care. The article was published in the July/August, 2020 edition of Zoomer Magazine. This in-depth feature investigated the underfunding, poor oversight and ignored warnings that left Canadian seniors’ homes unprepared for COVID-19 and contributed to the fact that over 80 percent of virus deaths occurred there. His other works include Police Wife: The Secret Epidemic of Police Domestic Violence, the first major non-fiction book to explore rampant domestic violence in police homes. The book’s two editions won or were finalists in 12 book awards. He manages a blog dedicated to this subject.
He is fluent in French, Ukrainian and Spanish and studied Arabic, Mandarin and Italian.
