Francesca Bianco, 2020 Magazine Award Co-Winner

Francesca Bianco was raised in Smithers, British Columbia, graduated from McGill University in English literature, and completed her master’s degree in journalism at the University of British Columbia in 2018. She is a former associate producer in the area of current affairs for CBC radio in Prince Rupert and Victoria.  As a freelance journalist, she has contributed to MONTECRISTO Magazine, and The Georgia Straight, with a focus on food, culture, and sustainability. In 2018, Francesca won the CBC Alexis Mazurin Award for creative radio storytelling.

Francesca's winning submission was for her feature piece “The Hand That Feeds You” published in the June 2020 edition of Maisonneuve Magazine. The story follows three Mexican migrant agricultural workers in B.C. through the short-term work visits that become a permanent way of life. How did we reach the point where the people fuelling Canada’s food system are both the most precarious and the lowest paid? The pandemic urges us to consider our system’s hidden costs—and perhaps re-imagine Canadian farming and the temporary foreign farm workers’ scheme entirely.  You can read Francesca's winning article here (Link for "here: https://maisonneuve.org/article/2020/06/17/hand-feeds-you/).

Currently her freelance work takes her regularly to Italy and Norway.
